Take-off is Our New Newsletter for Aspiring Pilots
In this edition of “Take Off,” we’re focusing on the medical examinations that aspiring pilots must complete before starting their training.
Medical Requirements for Pilots
To fly as a pilot in the USA, you’ll need an FAA Class 2 Medical, which must be obtained before beginning your training. This examination is conducted by an FAA-certified aviation medical examiner (AME) and can be completed at locations worldwide. Before your appointment, you can prepare and submit your information through the FAA MedXPress website, which helps streamline the process during your in-person visit. The FAA Class 2 Medical covers key health areas including vision, cardiovascular health, and general well-being. This medical certification remains valid for the duration of your training and is essential for proving your fitness to fly in the United States.
For those pursuing a European license, you’ll need an EASA Class 1 Medical, which is more comprehensive in its testing. This medical must be issued by the Austro Control Authority in Austria, but it can also be conducted at licensed Aeromedical Centers in other countries. The EASA Class 1 Medical remains valid for 12 months and cannot be renewed in the United States. For this reason, we recommend scheduling a renewal while visiting Europe during your training to avoid any disruptions to your eligibility.
Navigating Your Medical Exams
Getting a medical exam shouldn’t be a cause for concern – most candidates pass without any issues. If you have specific health questions or concerns, we suggest consulting an aviation medical examiner in advance to address any doubts and understand the requirements. Doing so can provide peace of mind and help you focus fully on achieving your goal of becoming a pilot.
