Take-Off #9 – How to prepare for your flight training

Take-off is Our New Newsletter for Aspiring Pilots

Your path to becoming a pilot begins with the right preparation. To ensure a smooth start to your training at Hillsboro Aero Academy, we’ve put together some essential tips on how to prepare linguistically, theoretically, and logistically.

Linguistic Preparation

English is the foundation of your entire training. Here are some apps that can help you improve your language skills:

  • Duolingo: Perfect for daily English practice, helping you build vocabulary and grammar skills.
  • Memrise: Offers specialized courses in technical English, which can be especially helpful for pilots.
  • ARSim (Plane English): This app simulates radio communication and helps you practice ATC (Air Traffic Control) English, crucial for flight training.

Theoretical Preparation

Getting a head start on the theoretical aspects can give you an advantage:

  • FAA Pilot Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge: This is a free resource provided by the FAA, covering the basics of flight theory, navigation, regulations, and more. It’s an excellent starting point for understanding aviation fundamentals.
  • Skybrary: An extensive online library offering insights into aviation procedures and safety protocols.
  • YouTube: Channels like Mentour Pilot or Captain Joe offer valuable video content that explains key concepts in an easy-to-understand way. Additionally, Captain Joe’s Aviation Masterclass is a comprehensive resource to deepen your knowledge before and during your training.

Logistical Preparation

Careful planning of the logistical aspects is crucial for a smooth experience:

  • FAA Class 2 Medical: This is a required medical examination for flying in the USA. You can complete it at any FAA-certified aviation medical examiner (AME) worldwide.
  • EASA Class 1 Medical: For the EASA license, you’ll also need an EASA Class 1 Medical conducted at designated Aeromedical Centers all over Europe. It is crucial that your EASA Medical is issued by Austro Control. This certification is valid for 12 months and needs regular renewal during your training.
  • Health Insurance: Make sure to secure health insurance coverage that includes your stay in the USA. This is not mandatory but an important step to ensure you’re protected during your training.

Additional Resources to Support Your Journey

Here are some more resources to help you prepare effectively:

  • FAA Regulations and Handbooks: Accessible through the FAA’s official website, these materials provide detailed guidance on regulations and best practices.
  • Airman Certification Standards (ACS): A document provided by the FAA that outlines the knowledge and skills required for different pilot licenses.
  • Captain Joe’s Aviation Masterclass: This comprehensive masterclass covers advanced topics in aviation, helping you build a solid theoretical foundation before you even step into the cockpit.

Why Preparation Is So Important

Thorough preparation not only ensures a smooth start to your training but also helps you progress more quickly. By starting early with theory and language practice, you can avoid unnecessary delays and make the most of your time in training.

The better prepared you are, the more you’ll benefit from your experience at Hillsboro Aero Academy. Your journey to becoming a pilot doesn’t start in the cockpit—it starts now.
